On October 14, 2025, the Metropolitan Pima Alliance (MPA) Board of Directors announced its support for RTA Next, the Regional Transportation Authority’s proposed next-generation regional transportation plan.

At the time of the announcement, RTA Next sought voter approval to renew Pima County’s existing half-cent transportation sales tax. The plan had been approved by the RTA Board in September 2025 and was scheduled to go before voters in March 2026.

Why MPA supported RTA Next

MPA viewed the plan as an important regional investment in connectivity, economic vitality and long-term infrastructure. The organization also highlighted the collaborative process behind the plan, including work by elected officials from across the region, the Technical Management Committee and RTA leadership.

Accountability and realistic delivery

MPA’s endorsement also emphasized the importance of realistic project budgets, transparent implementation and delivering on commitments made to voters.

The organization acknowledged that the original RTA program encountered revenue and timing challenges tied to major economic disruptions, including the Great Recession and COVID-19 pandemic, as well as slower-than-anticipated regional population growth. MPA nevertheless pointed to continued efforts to complete the original program and to ground RTA Next in fiscal responsibility and community priorities.

MPA supported continued public dialogue around the plan and its implementation, with a focus on transportation investments that strengthen the region as a whole and support Southern Arizona’s long-term competitiveness.
