Economic potential of Tucson Commerce Corridor is explored

For eight hours one day last week, the region’s business community came together with a unified voice in support of the explosive economic potential of Tucson’s Commerce Corridor on the southeast side.
The industrial-warehouse-research megaplex located on both sides of Interstate 10 between Swan Road and Houghton Road was the focal point of the Metropolitan Pima Alliance’s 7th annual Wild Ride March 24.
The tour focused on economic development and explored ventures at the Port of Tucson/Century Park Research Center, the University of Arizona Science and Technology Park, and the Target Fulfillment Center.
David Welch, a senior vice president with Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities, told the 175 attendees that local, state and national business interests are “bullish on the future of the corridor for what we can do here.”
The event was led by alliance Executive Director Michael Guymon. It also featured speakers, exhibit booths, and a networking reception at the Pima Air & Space Museum, 6000 E. Valencia Road.

As part of our work throughout the community, MPA hosts an annual event called Wild Ride. The event traditionally gives the community an opportunity to see a ground-level view of the land use planning and development process. This year, however, MPA is focusing on economic development moreso than land development. During a time of recession, we felt it important to learn the advantages and disadvantages of our region so that we can work to turn our deficits into assets! Attendees include elected officials, government staff, business leaders, and community activists. This event is not only an education, it is also a remarkable networking and marketing event due to the hundreds of attendees.
INVITATION
THIS YEAR'S PROGRAM:
11am: Begin your Wild Ride at the Pima Air and Space Museum (6000 E. Valencia). Trade booths will be set up for guests to peruse prior to sitting down for lunch. Companies and industries will be represented at the booths so that we can learn more about companies contributing to our local economy. Our special guest speakers represent national companies that develop science and tech parks throughout the country. Moderated by TREO, we will hear why Lincoln Properties chose to develop the Bioscience Park locally, whereas Forest Cities chose to develop their Mesa del Sol project in Albuquerque. We will be given great insight as to why these companies made the decisions they did in determining where to place their projects.
1:30pm: Following our lunchtime presentation we will jump aboard busses that will give us a tour of Tucson's Commerce Corridor. We will take a Wild Ride and explore the U of A Science and Tech Park, Target Distribution Center, Century Park Research Center/Port of Tucson and other local companies comprising this area of opportunities. During this portion of the ride, we will hear from the Solar Zone, the Commerce Corridor and the University of Arizona Science and Tech Park.
4:30pm: We will conclude our tour back at the Pima Air and Space Museum where we will have a cocktail hour focusing on Hospitality and Tourism. Tucson Airport will discuss how they contribute to our economy and how we can locally make a difference. The Ritz Carlton will conclude our event as they discuss their activities and why they chose to move into the Tucson market.
